Why Dental X-Rays Matter for Your Oral Healt By Dr. Reed on May 13, 2026

The Significance of Radiographic Imaging at the Dentist

Many patients wonder whether dental x-rays are truly necessary or worry about radiation exposure during routine visits. These are valid questions, and at Link Dental we believe patients deserve clear answers, transparent recommendations, and the safest technology available

A clinical exam provides a great deal of important information and often helps us identify a specific issue or assess overall oral health. In many cases, signs of systemic health conditions can also appear in the mouth, and dental professionals are trained to recognize those patterns and recommend the appropriate next steps. Because many patients see their dentist more regularly than their medical team, dental visits can play an important role in supporting overall health.

Dental X-rays Help Support Better Treatment Outcomes

Even so, dental radiographs remain one of the most important tools in a thorough evaluation. Guidelines for the type and frequency of imaging help us take a preventive approach to care. Thanks to major advances in technology, today’s radiographic imaging is more efficient and involves far less exposure than many patients realize. Accuracy, clarity, and precision are essential aspects of what we expect from our radiographic imaging systems. This allows us to accommodate patient preferences while maintaining our clinical standards. Prevention and wellness are a big component of our service which is provided by our dental hygiene team. During these visits, it is customary to take radiographs on a periodic basis. Ahead of time, it is our policy to inform the patient of the need and provide the indication for these essential images. In our experience, this has allowed for a more proactive, conservative, and cost-effective style of care. Without appropriate radiographic evaluation, certain oral health conditions may be more difficult to detect in their earlier stages. Patient comfort and safety are a top priority which is why we only utilize techniques and equipment that meet regulatory guidelines.

2-D vs 3-D Xrays

We use both traditional 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional radiographic imaging. The 3-D approach, often called a CT scan or cone beam scan, is an incredibly useful tool for diagnosis, treatment planning, and prevention. Compared with 2-D images, 3-D imaging provides additional views of the orofacial structures and a broader field of view. This allows us to evaluate concerns more thoroughly and can help reveal problems that may be difficult to detect on a standard 2-D image.

Understanding Root Resorption

Root resorption is a somewhat rare but potentially serious condition. It is a normal process in baby teeth as they make way for adult teeth, but it is not common in permanent adult teeth. It can occur after trauma, rapid orthodontic tooth movement, or significant inflammation within the tooth or surrounding tissues. In many cases, symptoms are vague or may not appear until the condition has progressed significantly. By that point, the tooth may no longer be restorable.

With accurate radiographic evaluation and a thorough clinical assessment, root resorption can sometimes be detected earlier, allowing treatment to slow or stop its progression. We recently treated a patient who had experienced soreness around a tooth on and off for years. Initially, the patient declined radiographs because of concerns about radiation exposure related to their work. After discussing those concerns and answering their questions, we took an x-ray. Unfortunately, the tooth showed advanced root resorption and was no longer restorable, even though it appeared normal during the clinical exam.

Dental Imaging at Link Dental

As part of our commitment to comprehensive oral health care, we routinely take and review radiographs when appropriate. We also use advanced diagnostic software that helps identify changes within each image and color-codes areas of concern. This technology is a valuable addition to our diagnostic process and can help patients better visualize and understand what we see. It also allows us to provide more proactive and informative care.

Some Fun Facts About Radiology:

  • The American Dental Association is partnered with 80 other health care organizations to support a program titled Image Gently. This initiative is focused on proper calibration of radiographic processes and frequencies to “child-size” radiography in both medicine and dentistry.
  • The first successful dental X-ray was taken in 1896 by the German scientist Dr. Otto Walkhoff.
  • According to the EPA, consuming one banana would deliver a total dose of 0.01 millirem (0.1 microsieverts) of radiation. This is a very small amount of radiation. To put that in context, you would need to eat about 100 bananas to receive the same amount of radiation exposure as you get each day in United States from natural radiation in the environment.
  • Emerging MRI-based imaging technologies may eventually provide additional diagnostic options in dentistry without ionizing radiation exposure. A recent study in the NIH National Library of Medicine highlights major advancement in this field which is paving the way for faster, more accurate, and safer modalities.

Our goal is to help patients improve their oral health by meeting them where they are, respecting their concerns, and using the most current technology alongside high clinical standards.
